Petition to Require Rape Crisis Training for All UNT Housing Hall Directors, Resident Life Advisors, and Desk Clerks
Statistically, 1 in 5 college women will experience rape or attempted rape, and fewer than 5% of these are reported to law enforcement*. When applied to UNT, this means that there are approximately 737 sexual assaults every year, with approximately 37 expected reports to law enforcement. UNT's Division of Student Affairs acknowledges 3 reports of forcible sex offense on campus for 2009, 2010, 2011.** We feel that this number is grossly unrepresentative of the number of sexual assaults that actually take place, and that this is because there is a distinct lack of resources available to victims on campus. UNT Housing shall assume responsibility for training all Hall Directors, Resident life Advisors, and Desk Clerks in: Immediate response and emotional support for victims of rape and sexual assault. Emergency and reporting procedures for rape and sexual assault. General knowledge of local medical, legal, and support resources available to victims of rape and sexual assault, both on and off campus, 24-hours a day.
Continuous efforts shall be made by UNT to promote the availability and ability of these staff to respond to rape and sexual assault including: References made to available help in literature, presentations, and meeting related to UNT orientation and UNT Housing, as well as on UNT's web site. Permanent and prominently displayed plaques near the front desks of all UNT housing buildings.
